What is the Reggio Emilia Approach?

The Reggio Emilia Approach is an educational philosophy. The aim of this approach is teaching how to use these symbolic languages (eg., painting, sculpting, drama) in everyday life. The program is based on the principles of respect, responsibility, and community through exploration and discovery in a supportive and enriching environment based on the interests of the children through a self-guided curriculum.

What is Inquiry-based learning?

Inquiry-based learning starts by posing questions, problems or scenarios—rather than simply presenting established facts or portraying a smooth path to knowledge. The process is often assisted by a facilitator. Inquirers will identify and research issues and questions to develop their knowledge or solutions. Inquiry-based learning includes problem-based learning, and is generally used in small scale investigations and projects, as well as research. The inquiry-based instruction is principally very closely related to the development and practice of thinking skills.

What kind of paint do you use?

We use non-toxic paints, approved and safe for children and made in Canada.

What kind of canvases do you use?

All canvases are stretch, primed, cotton, absorbent canvases made in Canada.

Will there be a specific theme to the workshop?

Yes, you can check the themes on our website, when you register for the workshops. However, we always like to keep our workshop themes open-ended, as it helps a child and parent explore their creativity and innovative ideas.

Why does Raising Artists feel it’s important to have open-ended themes?

Not all children today are being taught the creating process. With the internet just a click away, anyone can go online and find a picture to replicate. We are coming back to the basics creating on a blank canvas with paint and their incredible gigantic imaginations. This creative process is a useful skill children will acquire and utilize in and throughout life. Raising Artists gives children the foundation to foster this creative process, and we model these practices in our workshops for parents to witness.

Do I have to stay and participate in the workshop?

Yes, these workshops are designed specifically for parents and children to create art together. Adult participation is required!

Is there an extra fee for materials?

No, all materials are included in the cost of the workshop.
